Turnagain Arm is a waterway into the northwestern part of the Gulf of Alaska. It is one of two narrow branches of Cook Inlet, the other being Knik Arm. Turnagain is subject to climate extremes and large tide ranges. It is one of the most scenic and beautiful drives in Southcentral Alaska. It is also a place to view bore tides and Beluga Whales.
Karen Mattson, Artist Karen Mattson grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but moved to Alaska in 1968. Her interest in art began at an early age and it sparked a lifelong journey into the discovery of making art. She considers herself a self-taught artist, but has enjoyed learning from a few artists traveling in Alaska. The excitement, challenges, spontaneity and surprises of watercolor invigorate her, so she constantly makes demands on herself to expand on the possibilities of this medium. Her intrigue with flowers comes from a deep love of gardening and the miracles, shadows and colors it produces. Her plein air work is primarily painted with oils and the use of a palette knife.
